Research

‘London Underground’ utilizes a study of capturing movement within still imagery, made when producing my MA dissertation in London, England.

London Underground

Imagery

The images captured provide both a sense of motion and a sense of place.

Motion

Slow shutter speeds and fast motion blur frames. Simple postproduction applies motion to static images through dissolves upon dissolves.

A Sense of Place

Placement geographically, the frames were captured aboard a London underground train. Our placement within the frame as a viewer, are we aboard the train? Our place in life, are we moving as fast as the train? Or is the light washing over and past us?

Compression

The manipulation of the frame beyond the organic setting of the lens and the digital blur of a dissolve, compression too became a factor. Slower frame rates and dissolved pixilation, in this case, add to the overall experience while subtracting from the quality of the frame.
